Hi! I'm Nicole, the creator
of birdbrain.vet

I am a veterinarian & clinical pathologist; helping you master lab testing & interpretation is my #1 goal.

Getting really good at lab test interpretation & next steps can transform your approach to patient care, improve patient outcomes, and make your job just a bit easier.

For nearly 20 years, I've taught students as well as veterinarians, pathology residents, & veterinary technicians/nurses how to interpret blood work, understand the 'why' behind a test or test result, select the next best test (or know when one isn't needed), make & review blood smears, perform UAs, read cytology, & understand the abstract findings on a urine sediment, & so much more.

No matter your level in practice or school, whether just starting and feeling a bit lost or more experienced and wanting a new way of doing things, I'll meet you where you are. birdbrain.vet is the vehicle to get you to your next level.

do you sometimes feel stuck when reviewing a patient's lab results?

You've gotten the email or print out with results and think, hmm, what now? Maybe it's a cytology or biopsy report, culture & sensitivity results, snap test, discrepant SDMA & creatinine, or a standard CBC/Chemistry/UA panel.

Is the next step really to biopsy or culture?

The sodium & chloride are so low but the dog is completely normal! Addison's?! AKI?! Something else?

How and do I need to confirm this positive FeLV result?

We have the answers for you.

do you feel like most resources just give you a laundry list of differentials but no approach?

A long list of all the possible causes does not help when you're between appointments & have 5 minutes to sort out what comes next.

And while we love a zebra (the animal & the rare differential), let's have a solid plan to work through the more likely differentials first. Then we'll talk zebras.

We both know that you deserve real strategies & a practical appraoch to test results because that is what makes you the go-to in your clinic or classroom.

you've called the lab consult line or even consulted AI, but the 'answer' feels generic.

The pathologist report says one thing but the consult line is telling you to do more tests? Or AI gave you an answer but you really aren't sure it applies to this specific patient or is even correct.

You deserve real & specific guidance from the people who know lab diagnostics best and know how to empower you (without an upsell or judgement).

do you love being in the lab or want to love it (or at least not hate it)?

Getting thrown into a lab setting with minimal training is rough! Or maybe you are just at the beginning of your educational journey. One of us may have thought platelets were infectious agents in her first year of a clin path residency. You are not alone! It can be overwhelming.

Being skilled in the lab is a game-changer & great for job retention - a well-trained technician/nurse, student, or vet can run circles around any AI instrument. Trust us.

birdbrain.vet gives you strategies...

so that you know what other tests to look at, which steps to take, what to believe (or not), and how to take the absolute best care of your patients (and yourself)!

Transform your learning + diagnostic skills.

Master lab + diagnostic testing fundamentals so that you consistently know how to diagnose your patient.

Know the next step to take in blood work interpretation, additional testing, & patient care.

Feel supported + empowered - ask questions on our forum and during office hours (all moderated by specialists).

We can help you build the bridge to whatever you want your next level to be.

Vet med has plenty of challenges. Laboratory diagnostic interpretation + planning is one where we've got your back. Our goal is practical guidance for test results with a solid foundation of disease + organ pathophysiology. Plus plenty of fun infographics, hematology and other images. And personal attention via interactive office hours, a community forum, + additional learning during CE offerings (expected fall 2026).
