hello there.

meet our team.

while we'd rather focus on cells or medicine (or even birds) than talk about ourselves, we've included a bit of info in case you want to know about us.

We tend not to take ourselves very seriously - so come to office hours and get to know us there (and let us get to know you).

nicole weinstein

veterinarian +
clinical pathologist

nicole loves learning + sharing that learning...and so it was either return to academia (where she taught for over 15 years) or create a website!  Simplifying challenging concepts and empowering learners are her passions. Nicole also runs a small diagnostic laboratory, after transitioning from a corporate lab. When her eyes go crossed from too much birdbrain screentime, you can find her walking a dog or baking (& promptly eating) something sweet.

emily seidel

veterinarian + internal medicine specialist

emily is an internal medicine practitioner who discovered her love for teaching during her residency working with 4th year students. She is as practical and skilled a medicine clinician as can be, which is why she is so loved at birdbrain, where she reminds us what actually happens in the real world. And, she submits the prettiest cytology cases! When emily needs an escape from vet med world, you can find her riding her horse or on an amazing travel adventure.

reema patel

veterinarian +
clinical pathologist

reema is all the things, highly skilled cytopathologist, cytology teacher, + excellent friend. She trained nicole + koranda as clinical pathologists (among many others) and was deemed 'mama bird' because no one really wanted to leave the nest. She is a champion of wayward shih tzus, an endless source of 80s TV/music references, and a lover of all aquatic creatures.

koranda walsh

veterinarian + clinical pathologist + internal medicine specialist

koranda somehow balances all of the hardest things, a head role in clinical pathology at a new veterinary school, the lead on a business venture focusing on psychological safety and making veterinary learning + work spaces a bit friendlier, and a mother to human + feline littles. She is also a fantastic teacher with a brilliant mind and is the most supportive friend.

stephen cole

veterinarian +
microbiologist

stephen is the go-to for all things infectious. We all bonded over a love for fungal diseases & a shared hallway at work many years ago. Stephen has blended an intense knowledge base and clinical practicality to make bacterial culture & sensitivity testing actually understandable to the rest of us. He is also a master at puns + a bit of a comedic genius. We are thrilled he is a part of bb!

Who is the birdbrain?

Well, everyone and no one. Most of us have experienced that moment where we weren't ready to leave the nest. That time we wanted someone to tell us we could do it, be there for us even when we don't know the answer (or didn't even know to ask the question), or just believe so deeply in our dream, we believe them too.

That is who we are. We believe in you. We believe in us. We want you to feel welcome to ask all the questions (because we promise someone else or many someone elses have the same ones), to have today be the day you learned (or re-learned) something new, and to believe that you can do it - because we are here to help, if you need the push out of the nest or just want to spend a bit more time in it.

We hope you'll join us on this adventure - because we want to learn from you too!
